How To Fight The Skin's Signs of Menopause

Menopause, or peri-menopause (the period leading up to when periods stop which can last for several years) can affect the condition of your skin, as well as everything else that we have to deal with! One reason for this is that the production of oestrogen naturally decreases; oestrogen is important for collagen production, providing strength and structure to the skin. A lack of collagen can lead to laxity and lack of elasticity.

As your oestrogen levels diminish, you might also notice that your skin starts to seem thinner. This is also down to lower oestrogen levels; there’s less blood flowing to the upper layer of your skin, and more water being lost from it, so skin can start to get dehydrated. The most obvious signs of this are that you notice your skin losing its ‘glow’. You might look a little bit tired and notice a few fine lines and wrinkles. On top of this, some women notice that their skin starts to feel dry and itchy. Some women also experience hormonal acne (for the first time in some cases) and changes to their usual skin pigment.

Sun care in menopause

It’s really important to look after your skin as you go through to menopause, and this of course means taking extra care with your sun protection. I tell my clients at my skin clinic in Needham Market that they should always use a daily sunscreen (a good quality, high SPF on the face is essential) and at this time of life, it’s even more vital. Menopausal skin can be more susceptible to UV damage which along with all the other dangers can also lead to developing wrinkles, age spots and sun damage.

Keeping mature skin in good condition

It is really important to use a good moisturiser as you go through peri-menopause and beyond, as this will help to keep your skin protected and hydrated. Moisturisers help by smoothing out and protecting the upper layers of your skin and also help to prevent the body losing water through the skin (trans-epidermal water loss).

I can help you support you at this time of your life with effective treatments designed to look after your skin. Regular facials will help to nourish your skin and keep it looking more youthful. Taking good care of your skin will also help with concerns like acne and dryness which I’m happy to help you with in my skin clinic. I can also recommend you good quality skincare products to support your skincare routine at home.
