Your Guide to Post-summer Skincare

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

So here it is - Autumn has finally arrived with a much chillier outlook now set to see us through to the end of 2023.

Now is the time to help your skin recover from those summer months where the UV rays are at their strongest and we typically spend a lot more time out and about enjoying the sunshine.

If, like me, you've made the most of those summer months - either here in the UK or abroad, you may find that you're experiencing some changes to your skin, such as:

  • Discolouration or dark spots

  • More prominent fine lines and wrinkles caused by dehydrated skin

  • Congested, enlarged pores (sadly sun cream and excess oils can clog our pores up when the temperature soars)

Here's 5 simple tips to help get your skin looking and feeling its best over the coming months:

DETOX

Deep cleansing with salicylic or mandelic acid-based cleansers that reach deep into the pores will help to prevent acne breakouts and generally will help to clear your skin after the use of sun creams over the summer. I recommend the AlumierMD Purifying Gel Cleanser or IS Clinical Cleansing Complex. Then use a gentle exfoliating toner as a double cleanse and surface exfoliation such as AlumierMD's Bright & Clear Toner.

RECOVER

Whether you're looking to hydrate and brighten your skin after sunburn, minimise sun spots and skin discolouration or smooth an uneven skin texture, face masks are an effective way to help your skin recover from a summer of sunshine. I love the Meder Hydra-fill Deep Hydration Mask - it's loaded with hyaluronic acid - giving your skin that much needed boost of moisture and radiance. You may notice your post-summer skin has more pigmentation now than it does at other times of the year - that's because exposure to the sun's UVB rays, which are more intense in the summer months, can contribute to uneven skin tone, brown spots and skin discolouration. The UV light triggers your melanocytes, or pigment-making cells, to pump out more pigment. This mask will help to reduce the signs of sun damage before moving on to our next step.

CORRECT

Start to address the damages from sun exposure with Vitamin C - the master antioxidant keeping our skin cells fresh and healthy, whilst also lightening and brightening. The AlumierMD VitC&E is by far the best I've come across. Also specific targeted serums that address pigmentation would be Epionce MelanoLyte Tx - a great pigment corrector.

NOURISH

Though we tend to think of winter as the season of dryness, summer has many factors of its own that zap moisture from the skin - sun, salt water, chlorine and air conditioning to name a few. So, by the time Autumn rolls round, you will definitely want to add more ultra-hydrating products to your skin regime. Using serums is by far the most powerful and effective way to rehydrate the skin. Neostrata Firming Tri-therapy Lifting Serum is my go-to, with a few drops of this oily liquid leaving my skin dewy and hydrated. Another favourite of mine is IS Clinical Hydra-cool Serum that blends so well with the skin brightening effect visibly smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Also opting for richer balms and moisturisers once the serums have been absorbed such as the AlumierMD Recovery Balm and SkinBetter Science Alto Advanced Defense and Repair or Epionce Renewal Facial Cream (ideal for dry/sensitive skin) these multi-tasking powerhouse products will provide universal correction, plus much needed moisture for your skin - helping reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and age spots whilst improving clarity and radiance. Consider this serum and moisture combination the dynamic duo for nourishing post-summer skin.

ALL-ROUNDER

As summer ends, the focus may be on skin correction but that doesn't mean we're ready to let go of our summer glow. The key is to keep it going in a safe, healthy way using our much needed sunscreens. I've recently discovered my new favourite SPFs: Intradermology Synergy 6 SPF with a hint of tint and moisture - giving you colour throughout the winter months with factor 50 protection and AlumierMD Versatile Tint Sheer Hydration SPF 40 - absolute game changers!

With these 5 simple steps, you can reverse the signs of summer damage, dryness and clogged pores, whilst keeping your healthy, sun-kissed radiance.

"The Crystal Rose Clinic is spotlessly clean and professionally run by the very informative and friendly Rosy. I had very good results after a treatment of radio frequency microneedling. Decided, after a lot of thought, to invest in the Vitamin C and Retinol that Rosy recommended. WOW! Fantastic products and results. Radiant and glowing skin within only a few days. Thank you Rosy. See you soon." Elena Andreou
