Looking after your skin this Autumn

As summer fades and autumn arrives, the changing weather brings with it new skin challenges. Cooler temperatures, lower humidity, wind, indoor heating — all these can leave skin looking dull, feeling dry, or reacting more than usual. The key is to adapt your skincare routine and incorporate treatments that address seasonal stresses. Here’s some of my top tips for looking after your skin this Autumn.
Autumn skin challenges
Loss of moisture / dehydration: The air becomes drier in Autumn, and indoor heating strips moisture. Dehydrated skin can look flaky, tight, or dull.
Barrier sensitivity: Reduced humidity, wind, and frequent temperature changes weaken the skin’s barrier making it more susceptible to irritation, redness, or sensitivity.
Redness & vascular concerns: Cold wind, flushing from temperature differences, and sometimes rosacea symptoms worsen in autumn.
Pigmentation & dullness: Less sun gives less natural glow, but prior sun damage shows up in uneven tone or pigmentation.
Slower skin cell renewal & buildup: Dead skin tends to stay on the surface for longer, so skin can feel rougher, look older, or show fine lines more.
Rosy’s top Autumn skincare tips
Switch to richer moisturisers / barrier-supporting products
Use a rich cream or serum to seal in hydration. Night creams can be especially helpful.
Gentle cleansing
Avoid harsh soaps or foaming cleansers that strip your skin. Use mild cleansers, and avoid very hot water (which dries the skin further).
Exfoliate carefully – be gentle
Gentle chemical exfoliants or mild peels help remove the buildup of dead skin but avoid aggressive physical exfoliation which can irritate.
Sun protection still matters
Even in autumn and winter, UV rays, especially UVA, contribute to pigmentation, ageing, and vascular damage. Whilst Vitamin D is important, especially in the darker months – limit your exposure without protection to half an hour per day, and use a broad-spectrum SPF daily, even on cloudy days.
Protect skin outdoors
Wear scarves, hats, and protect your face from wind.
Lifestyle matters
Stay hydrated, eat antioxidant-rich foods (berries, leafy greens, etc), avoid sudden temperature extremes and manage stress — all aid skin repair and cell regeneration.
Repair & rejuvenate with treatments
Autumn is a great time to invest in treatments that benefit from minimal sun exposure.
